SINCE “FIELD JAM” BOOTLEG TAPES

This tape series collects memories of SINCE gigs hosted at East-Rome-based social space Fanfulla 5/a during the 2019/2020 season.
With a basic field-mic, we recorded the guest DJs and selectors performing a specific 'background set' made of music and/or personal recordings and compositions. Then the audience was invited to interact with the set, playing instruments provided in advance.
We called this Field Jams.

The very first Field Jam took place at East-Rome record and library Pescheria. Then the Field Jams became part of the usual programming at Fanfulla 5/a, filling the slot right before the DJ-sets, with turntables and CDJs used as musical instruments. Our idea was to let the DJ or the selector and the crowd express themselves and improvise together while listening to each other.
Next to each other, the artist and the public celebrated gathering around a common "sacred" desk placed at 90° with the DJ console, in the shape of a Latin cross (†).

The result is a unique and vibrant listening experience that captures the same 'room reverb' and offers levels of harmony and disharmony through multiple sound layers: the guest's DJ set, the percussions and instruments, the crowd chatters, the bottles and glasses clinking.

This fourth and closing chapter offers the stunning performance of the London-based Baroque Sunburst label co-founder Big Hands. Stretching and bending a unique selection of records and tunes, Big Hands turns the decks into instruments joining those played by the audience, perfectly embodying the core attitude of the Field Jams. At the start of the recording, we hear extracts from the conversation between the public, the DJs and Big Hands sharing thoughts about musical inspirations just before the jam.
